20. Distortion of a narration in which Companions of Mu'awiyah used to abuse Ali (as).

Ahmad bin Hanbal (Died 241 AH) narrated :

Abu A'ammar said he was at the house of Wathila ibn al-Asqa'a. The people brought up the name of Ali and they insulted him, I abused him along with them. When they left, Wathila told me why you abused that person ? I replied : I heard people abusing him, So i also abused him. He said : Don't i inform you what i saw from Prophet (pbuh), I said : Yes. .....Wathila said: Ali, Fatima, al-Hassan and al-Hussein came to him. The Prophet covered them with his cloak then recited this verse : {Surely we have intented to clean every impurity from you Ahl ul Bayt} and then said : O Allah, these are my Ahl ul Bayt and my Ahl ul Bayt are more derseving.

Kitab Fadhail u Sahabah - Ahmad bin Hanbal // Volume 2 // Page 714 - 715 // Number 978 // Edn. Dar Ibn Jawzi Riyadh Saudi Arabia.

Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Sha'ybah (Died 235 AH) narrated same tradition with same wording.

Musanaf - Ibn Abi Sha'ybah // Volume 17 // Page 117 - 118 // Number 32766 // Edn. Dar Al-Minhaj Riyadh Saudi Arabia.

Now this narration is also in Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal but here he erased second part in which they abused Ali (as)

Musnad - Ahmad bin Hanbal // Volume 28 // Page 195 // Number 16988 // Edn. Risalah Al-Alamiyyah Beriut Lebanon.

So you can see how Ahmad bin Hanbal has changed the narration so that sunni laymen would never think that anyone in their salaf used to abuse Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as).
