Ibn Hajr Asaqlani (Died 852 AH) and Boseri (Died 839 AH) both narrated in their books from Musnad Ishaq bin Ra’hwiyah (Died 238 AH) like this :

Malik bin Rabe’ah narrated that ‘Uthman bin Affan used to forbid ‘Umrah during the season of Hajj or Tamattu, But Ali (as) used to allow it at his own place. So ‘Uthman came from pulpit and took something and went straight towards Ali (as) and he poked his finger in eye and said to Ali (as) : You are misguided and Ali (as) didn’t replied him back.

Now same narration is quoted by Muslim bin Hajaj Neysaburi (Died 261 AH) and Ahmad bin Hanbal (Died 241 AH) and they changed the words of abuse by ‘Uthman which he used against Ali Ibn abi Talib (as).

Muslim did it by replacing words ” إنك لضالٌّ مُضِلٌّ  (Uthman called Ali (as) Misguided ) ” by (Uthman said something to Ali (as)”.

Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it twice and at both instances he distorted it by replacing this word by ” فقال عثمان لعليّ قولاً، (‘Uthman said to Ali (as) something) and فقال عثمان لعليّ: إنك كذا وكذا (‘Uthman said to Ali (as) this and that).
